'The Next Move'
oil on canvas 24" x 18
Inspired by a walk through beautiful local woodland and a glade with dramatic shafts of sunlight breaking through trees. I discovered an alarming amount of alien weed growing uncontrollably, strangling everything in it's wake. My thoughts turned to trees, now occupying a mere 13% of the UK landmass. They are endangered, and have been for centuries, not by weeds but by us, strangling their existence in the name of progress.
Continuing my use of chess pieces in paintings as representative of people, the foreground piece symbolizes progress at any cost. The hidden castle represents aspiration.
